Function model
Depending on the complexity of the task, and whether it is something completely new, it is practical to be able to build a functional model before PCB layout, either of the entire circuit or of sub-circuits.
The purpose is that early in the project process you can be sure that the concept/design you have chosen for the task also works and that any problems that may arise can be traced back to the PCB layout and not the circuit design.
Here is an example of a built functional model; note the Danpads used (sold in our webshop), which enable optimal placement and connection of critical components, also with SMD components.
